The Mile-a-Minute Afghan |
THE HEIRLOOM PROJECT
This project, like many of my projects, has a story, so here it is.
Over the years, I've swung back and forth between a variety of handcrafts. Many years ago I picked up a crochet hook to learn to the craft. While my mom had taught me to knit, I was never totally proficient, and I'm still working on my knitting; mien-while I've gradually picked up some simple crochet projects. About 10 years ago, my beloved late Mother-in-Law, Mary Lou, (who never knit or crochet as far as I know) shared with me a hand-written pattern for an afghan. It was in her mother's handwriting and there were a couple of these afghans draped in her home, made by her mother. I proceeded to crochet a couple of these afghans at that time, and found that even though it was an ambitious project, it was a simple pattern for a beginner like me.
Basically the pattern is worked in strips. The center is worked in a variegated yarn, then is edged in a light colored yarn, then again in a darker colored yarn, then each strip is joined using the same dark color.
FAST FORWARD to this past year. My step-daughter is engaged and as her wedding day got closer I was trying to think of something I could give her that would be very special to her. One of the most beloved in her life was her Grandma, my mother-in-law. Why not make her an HEIRLOOM AFGHAN!!!!?
And see a picture of my step-daughter opening her afghan.

AND.... here's the pattern... simple as pie.

Beautiful! I like the colors too. I'm sure your step daughter liked it.
Could you please tell me what colors you used? I know the middle is Cherry Chip but I can't figure out what the other 2 are?
Thank You

Thanks for your comments, yes she loves it, and is now expecting a little girl of her own, more afghans on the way.
The yarn is Loops & Threads Impeccable. from Michael's, and I can't remember the names of them,I'd have to go into the store and make a note of it. but I still see them in the stores. Basically you want a variegated, one coordinated 'light' solid color, and 'dark' solid...
I'll check the next time I'm there and pop the names in back here.
I have crocheted for over 40 plus years and have never head of a tc stitch. Can you explain it to me.

Hi Jess- TC is referencing a Triple Crochet (or Treble Crochet). On the ends of each strip using this stitch to create the shell shape at the end.
I found this Mile-a-Minute Afghan on Pinterest and thought I'd try making it. I am fairly new to crochet, and have never done a mile-a-minute afghan before. I seem to be having some trouble going from row 1 at the end with the "chain 3 - chain 3, turn" and then where to go with row 2. Am I missing something and could you clear this up for me please?
Hi, Could you tell me what size hook you used to make this?
Thanks, Carol
so sorry I haven't been watching this blog... thanks for asking.
it really is an easy project once you get the regular pattern in your head. I first did this as a newbie, and now I had to try it again to answer your question.... I think this is a typo, (MyBad) There needs to be another 2DC before the last ch 3 then turn and do the second row...
(update to that forthcoming)
Carol - Answer to the next question... I used a size G hook, but what ever is appropriate for your yarn is fine, it's not like you're trying to get a certain size.
I made one for my husband. What do you think? (I don't know how to post a picture so here is the link to my FB account). https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152619660112058&set=pb.743222057.-2207520000.1429044139.&type=3&theater
